Finding the range of a set using quadratics?

We usual calculate the mean of a set of numbers, but here we find the mean of a set of expressions.

Warm-up:

The Problem:

Given that the mean of this set of expressions is 10, what are the possible ranges?

{ 2⁢x-7 ,x ,(x-1)2 ,x2 ,5⁢x }

-/|\-

Solution:

Using the definition of mean and the set of numbers given we get:

( 2⁢x-7 +x +(x-1)2 +x2 +5⁢x ) 5 =10

Simplifying ...

2⁢x-7 +x +(x-1)2 +x2 +5⁢x =50 8⁢x-7 +(x2-2⁢x+1) +x2 =50 2⁢x2-6⁢x-56=0

This is a quadratic. Simplifying and solving ...

x={-4,7}

So, this gives us two posibilities for the range.

For x=-4 the set of values is {-15,-4,25,16,-20} resulting in a range of 25--20=45

and for x=7 the set of values is {7,7,36,49,35} resulting in a range of 49-7=42
