Prerequesite Materials:

v=u+a⁢t

s=u+v2⁢t

Describing "the Energy Equation"

v2=u2+2⁢a⁢s

Derivation:

Taking

v=u+a⁢t

and rearranging for t

t=v-ua

Then substitute this rearrangement into

s=u+v2⁢t

To give

s=(u+v2) ⁢(v-ua)

Simplifying

s= v2-u22⁢a v2=u2+2⁢a⁢s

We can also derived this directly from the following using calculus.

dvdt=a

Using the chain rule

dvds ⁢dsdt =a dv ds ⁢ v = a

Integrating with respect to s

∫ dv ds ⁢ v ⁢ d s = a ∫ d s ∫ v ⁢ dv = a ∫ d s v2 2 = a ⁢ s + C v2 = 2 ⁢ a ⁢ s + C

v=u when s=0. So,

u2 = 2 ⁢ a × 0 + C C=u2

Therefore,

v2=2⁢a⁢s+u2

Why "the Energy Equation"?

v2=u2+2⁢a⁢s

Multiply this by the mass, m of the moving object, we get

m⁢v2= m⁢u2+2⁢m⁢a⁢s

Noting that from Newton's Second Law, m⁢a=F then

m⁢v2= m⁢u2+2⁢F⁢s

Using the definition of Energy, W=F⁢s then

m⁢v2= m⁢u2+2⁢W

Then rearranging to make W the subject:

12⁢m⁢v2= 12⁢m⁢u2+W W =12⁢m⁢v2 -12⁢m⁢u2

This is the Work-Energy Principle which states that the work done on an object is equal to the change in kinetic energy.

Work Done=Change in Kinetic Energy W=ΔEkin
