Derivation of the Potential Divider Equations

Potential Divider Circuit

A figure showing a simple potential divider involving two resistances.

For a potential divider the current through each resistance are the same due to Kirchhoff's First Law.

I1=I2

Using Ohm's Law gives

V1R1=V2R2

From Kirchhoff's Second Law,

V=V1+V2

Solving these last two equations simultaneously for V1,

V =V1+V1⁢R2R1

Simplifying,

V1 =V⁢R1R1+R2

A symmetric argument can be used to show,

V2 =V⁢R2R1+R2
