Summation Notation

> Maths > Number > Sequences >

In previous work on series we have seen Sn notation which is the sum of the first n terms of a sequence,

Sn=U1+U2 +U3+...+Un Σi=1nxi =x1+ x2+ x3+...+ xn

Summation notation is similar to the S notation used before, but it has greater flexibility describing the sum and has some similarities to integration. Summation notation is also called sigma (Σ) notation.

The series Sn can be written in sigma notation as

Sn = Σi=1nxi

For the sum to infinity

S∞ =Σi=1∞xi

Some rules for sigma notation

Σi=1na=a⁢n
Σi=1na⁢xi = a⁢Σi=1nxi
Σi=1n (xi+yi) =Σi=1nxi +Σi=1nyi
Σi=1nxi =Σi=1mxi +Σi=m +1nxi

Sum of the Powers

Sum of the natural numbers.

Σi=1ni =12⁢n(1+n)
Σi=1ni2= 16⁢n⁢(1+n) ⁢(1+2⁢n)
Σi=1ni3 =14⁢n2 ⁢(1+n)2= (Σi=1ni)2

Summation Notation and the Binomial Expansion

To demonstrate the flexiblility of summation notation here is the binomial expansion:

(a+b)n =Σi=0n ( n i ) ⁢an-i ⁢bi
