Directed Number

3+4=7 3-4=-1 3+-4=3-4=-1 3--4=3+4=7 -3+4=1 -3+-4=-3-4=-7 -3×-4=12

Order of Operation

The order in which operations are performed can be remember by the mnemonic,

BIDMAS

Brackets - Indices - Division and/or Multiplication - Addition and/or Subtraction

(Note: sometimes B for Brackets is replaced with P for Parentheses; sometimes I for indices is replaced with O for order)

This will help in remembering the correct priority of operations when completing calculations. Those on the left have priority over those on the right, so calculations are completed from left to right if BIDMAS doesn't help.

Divisibility

An integer can be tested to see if it's divisibility using the following rules. Although you don't get an answer these are generally quicker than the complete calculation.

Divisibility RuleExample(s)
even
numbers
The last digit will be {0, 2, 4, 6, 8}
Will be divisible by at least one even factor
2, 106, 1354, 2468130
odd
numbers
The last digit will be {1, 3, 5, 7, 9}
Will only be divisible by odd numbers
1, 247, 2465, 1235703
1Any integer
{ ... -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, ... }
2Any even number
The last digit is {0, 2, 4, 6, 8}
3 The digit sum is a multiple of three 45375 : 4 + 5 + 3 + 7 + 5 = 24 ∴ is a multiple of three
34567 : 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 = 25 ∴ 34567 isn't a multiple of three
4 The last two digits are divisible by four As 24 is divisible by four then 724, 56724 and 1024524 are also.
However, as 17 isn't divisible by four then 817, 82617 and 20547117 aren't either.
5 The last digit is five or zero All of 515, 10345 and 5555060 are divisible by five. Whereas 517, 67551 and 5050503 are not.
6 The number is divisible by three and is even 75546 has a digit sum of 27 and is even so 75546 is divisible by six.
34557 has a digit sum of 24, so 34557 is divisible by three, but it is odd. Therefore, isn't divisible by six.
7just divide it by seven
8 The Last three digits are divisible by eight. As 64 is divisible by 8 then so is 1064, 123064 and 123456789064. However, 123100 isn't as 100 isn't either.
9 digit sum is a multiple of nine Given the number 927 the digit sum of 9 + 2 + 7 which 18 a multiple of nine, so 927 is also a multiple of nine;
however, given 2345 with a digit sum of 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 totalling 14 which isn't a multiple of nine, therefore 2345 isn't either.
10 last digit is a zero. 100, 123450, 9876543210 are,
but 75541, 75642, 75743, 75844, 75945, 76046, 76147, 76248 and 76349 are not.
11 alternate digit sum is a multiple of eleven 121121 has an alternate digit sum of 1-2+1-1+2-1 = 0 which is a multiple of eleven, so 121121 is divisible by eleven.
2948573 has an alternate digit sum of 2-9+4-8+5-7+5-3 = -11 which is a multiple of eleven.
3904857239 has an alternate digit sum of 3-9+0-4+8-5+7-2+3-9 = -8 which isn't divisible by eleven.
12 divisible by three and four 48: digit sum is 12, so 48 is divisible by three and it is in the four times table, therefore 48 is divisible by 12, i.e., 4 × 12;
9888: has a digit sum of 33, therefore 9888 is divisible by thee, also the last two digits, 88, are in the four timetable, so 9888 is divisible by 12, that is, 824 × 3 × 4;
734: this number is neither divisible by three or four because it's digit sum is 14 (not a multiple of three) and 34 isn't in the four times table, ie., 734 = 61 × 12 + 2.

The ideas above have been used to show the divisibility of positive number by positive numbers. These ideas can be extended to include the negative numbers too.

Ratio

To compare quantities, we can use ratios

Ratios can be simplified in the same way as fractions by finding common factors and cancelling.

To share out a quantity in a given ration, add the parts of the ratio to find the total number of parts, then divide the quantity by the number of parts to give the amount that each part represents. Then for each fraction of the ratio multiply the number of parts in each fraction by the quantity per part to give the amount for each fraction.

You can compare ratios by converting them into unitary form. This is where, at least, one of the fractions has a value of one and can be achieved by dividing all the fractions by the value of one of the fractions.

Error Interval

Describing the error interval of a number:

The error interval can be thought of as the reverse process of rounding a number. A number given rounded to a known amount must accually lie between two numbers given by the rounded number, n, plus or minus half the rounding amount δn, i.e. (n-δn2) ≤n<(n+δn2)

If x the number 2 has been rounded to the nearest the nearest whole number, then the error interval for x=2 is

1.5≤x<2.5

Note: x is only less than 2.5 as 2.5 would round to 3
