Chain Rule for Differentiation

Methods

∫ f′(x) f(x) ⁢dx = ln|f(x)|

If integrating expressions of the form

∫k ⁢ f′(x) f(x) ⁢dx

then try

ln|f(x)|

differentiate to check, and adjust with a constant if required.

∫ f′(x) ⁢ (f(x)) n ⁢dx = (f(x))n+1

If integrating expressions of the form

∫k ⁢ f′(x) ⁢ (f(x)) n ⁢dx

then try

(f(x))n+1

differentiate to check, and adjust with a constant if required.

Exercise 11D page 302 [ MS (Archive)]

Selected Solutions:

Ex 11D Qu 1 (i)
Given that sec2x is the derivative of tanx then the trial solution should be y=tan3x ⇒  dydx =3⁢sec2x⁢tan2x So, the trial solution needs to be adjusted by 13 ∫sec2x⁢tan2xdx =13⁢tan3x+C

Ex 11D Qu 1 (j)
Firstly, expand the integrand to give ∫ sec2x+sec2x⁢tan2x dx Then integrate term-wise, the first term from standard integrals and the second from part (i) of this question. Giving ∫sec2x ⁢(1+tan2x)dx = tanx+13⁢tan3x+C
